The B (Broadcast) form (i.e. ADS-B) is the satellite-based, data-linked system that will replace the current ATC radar-based management of the National Airspace System. What may not be as well-known, however, is that ADS-B is happening in the U.S right now, with over 500 transmission towers already in place across the country. FAA rulings on equipment standards and implementation dates have been in place since 2011, with full implementation of ADS-B Out in the U.S. mandated by 2020. ADS-B Out? This is where it starts to get a little more complicated, but we are going to keep it digestible from the flying pilot point of view. What are those 500 ADS-B towers sitting around doing? Watch this video to see. That’s right, your GPS-derived position and related data transmitted “Out” from your airplane is captured by the ground stations and presented to ATC (in the video, that’s Denver Center). Looks just like a high-quality radar picture, except the data is more precise (GPS vs. radar). Did you know that your airplane was doing this? Do you know which piece of equipment on that panel in front of you is doing this? According to our admittedly informal and for sure non-scientific survey taken from here at Advanced Aircrew Academy Global Headquarters, for at least some of us, the answer to those questions is no. So if that is you, Mr. or Ms. Jet Jockey, you may want to find out. Fear not, however, if that ADS-B Out gizmo lays down on the job. Ground-based radar via your trusty transponder is the back-up. The other thing those towers are doing is transmitting weather (FIS-B) and traffic information (TIS-B), and they require no paid subscription service. With FIS-B, you are getting basically the same package of weather as with many commercial products, including updating NexRad. That’s ADS-B In and odds are that if you are a turbine operator, you are not using either of these resources as you are getting that data from somewhere else, such as XM Weather and TCAS. If you are getting it, that is often another piece of gear on board as that data comes via a different frequency.
https://www.aircrewacademy.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/media_rokgallery_1_1b967edb-d37d-4bff-b586-b5e87f7e7c4c_c5a0d9e6-56a3-4534-fdeb-ce2ea3099638.png
