They include the AIM version of the new Climb Via procedures plus some much needed clarification of what’s going on when ATC vectors us off of a published DP/SID. Based on reviews of pilot-ATC communications since the Climb Via rollout on April 3, we all need to spend some more time getting up to speed with these procedures.

Arrival Procedures – Paragraph (and page) 5-4-1. The Descend Via procedures are in here. Not a lot of major change; mainly clarifications and examples.

Instrument Approach Procedure Charts – Paragraph 5-4-5 (page 5-4-8). The Explanation of Changes text for this one needs an explanation, so skip the summary and head to page 5-4-8. This revision is about charting differences between an Intermediate Fix (IF) and an Initial Approach Fix (IAF). The revision is not particularly clarifying however, so stay out of trouble by relying on the 5-letter name. We could see a revision to the revision on this one.

PRM Approaches – Paragraph 5-4-16. If you are not flying these you can skip this section, but if you are, you will definitely need to toggle down to page 5-4-42, as the addition of RNAV/GLS as a form of PRM has now appeared, and not just temporarily at SFO. As at SFO, the RNAV/GLS is an alternative to the ILS.

That’s it for the AIM revision. We recommend that you use the link above to go to the document and do your own quick review of the two ‘explanation’ pages to ensure that you get the flavor yourself, especially as it relates to any particular items of personal interest.

Here is a summary of a few items that strike us as among the more important:

GPS -– Paragraph 1-1-8. The changes begin on page 1-1-27. Consistent with the continuing evolution and standardization of GPS procedures worldwide, just reviewing the regularly revised AIM language on this subject is recommended, so scan down all of the text bordered with the black vertical side bar that indicates revision. The discussion of Computer Navigation Fixes (CNF) and the differences between them and other waypoint types could keep us out of trouble some dark and stormy night.

Speed Adjustments -– Paragraphs 4-4-12 and 5-5-9. This revision is basically a recap and inclusion of the revisions and clarifications published in January by the FAA in InFO 12014 about Climb Via and associated subjects. Hopefully you have received training on this subject by now, and if you read our blog article on Climb Via, you have the idea. Don’t forget the “Stay Out of Jail” card which the FAA is handing out for free: if you are not sure what ATC wants you to do, ask them to clarify.

[2
106
post-189","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-blog","tag-aeronautical-information-manualaimgpsspeed-adjustmentsinstrument-departure-proceduresarrival-proceduresinstrument-approach-procedure-chartsprm-approaches
["GET
