Useful battery life must be established and documented for your battery-powered EFBs. You must have either (1) an established procedure to recharge the battery from aircraft power during flight operations, (2) useful battery life for your flight to include diversions and expected delays, or (3) an acceptable mitigation strategy approved by the FAA to ensure aeronautical charts, checklists, or other data required by the operating rules are available.

Database Accuracy and Quality

The AC revision includes a new section on database quality control systems. Database errors are noted as a potential significant hazard for flight crewmembers. The AC requires a means to identify the database version, effective date, and valid operating period.

Slight Wording Edits

Throughout the document, there were minor word edits clarifying items and slight formatting changes. Some of the minor wording edits for clarification include:
Removal/attachment of a Class 2 EFB from the aircraft may be completed by the flightcrew without maintenance tasks.

All Class 1 and 2 EFBs are considered Portable Electronic Devices (PED). For a PED to be considered as an EFB, it must “host and actively display” type A, B, and/or C software applications and requires issuance of Ops Spec A061. The revision clarified use of non-EFB PEDs is restricted to 10,000 feet above ground level (AGL).

Failure Classification

The revision added a requirement for Type A and B software applications to have a failure condition classification of a minor hazard or less.

Noninterference Compliance Test

A third method for EFB PED Noninterference Compliance Test was added to the AC.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) published a revision to Advisory Circular (AC) 120-76, Guidelines for the Certification, Airworthiness, and Operational Use of Electronic Flight Bags, earlier this month. AC 120-76C replaces AC 120-76B published in 2012. Below is the gouge on what has changed in this revision and what affect it may have on your operations manual and training program.

Own-ship Position

The biggest change in the AC related to operational use of EFBs was the approval to display own-ship position while on the ground. The approval is limited to speeds of less than 80 knots with the caveat that the display can’t be used as the basis for compliance with regulatory requirements related to flightcrew procedures during taxi operations. Inflight depiction of own-ship position is still prohibited on a Class 1 or Class 2 EFB.

If you are going to use own-ship position on the ground, you must add visual check training to your EFB curriculum. That training should include how to conduct visual checks of airport signage and markings to the map display to verify the own-ship symbol accurately shows your position within 40 meters (120 feet). Training should also include how to report errors.

Advanced Aircrew Academy’s online EFB/iPad training module has been updated to include visual check training.

Cabin Crewmember Training

“Cabin crewmember” was added to the definition of a primary intended user of an EFB. Cabin crewmembers who are using software applications on an EFB now fall under the umbrella of having to have authorization by issuance of Ops Spec A061 for certificate holders or following the guidance in the AC for Part 91F operators (large and turbine-powered multiengine aircraft operating under Part 91). The implication of the addition is cabin crewmembers should be included in your EFB training program if they are using software applications defined in the appendix of the AC.

[2
111,112,113
post-195","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-blog","tag-airworthiness","tag-and-operational-use-of-electronic-flight-bagsdatabase-accuracy-and-qualitynoninterference-compliance-testfailure-classificationcabin-crewmember-training","tag-federal-aviation-administration-faaadvisory-circular-ac-120-76-guidelines-for-the-certification
["GET
