It takes a little getting used to seeing another airplane clear the runway when you’re on short final, but when the mechanism is functioning correctly it all works out OK.

Caveat Emptor (buyer beware) on those visual departures and approaches with traffic in sight. Remember that when you report the preceding aircraft in sight YOU accept responsibility for traffic separation.

We’ve got more detailed information in the Wake Turbulence training here at Advanced Aircrew Academy and for further reference you can consult the official guidance from the FAA in their PDF located here: FAA Order 7110.659A Wake Turbulence Recat.

NextGen, NextGen, NextGen….There’s airspace redesign, optimal flow rates and planning, ADS-B, and a bunch of other acronyms that you may have heard of.

You’re thinking to yourself, how does any of this actually affect me? If you’ve noticed that recently your aircraft seems to be a lot closer to a departing aircraft or tighter behind that arriving Citation, then welcome to the most visible component of NextGen that is happening right now.

The easiest way to increase traffic flow is to squeeze airplanes closer together on departure and arrival. The FAA implemented the new wake turbulence categories (RECAT) on June 1st, 2014 all over the country. The new RECAT takes a look at your aircraft wingspan, weight, and ability to survive a wake turbulence encounter and places you in a 6 column grid (instead of a standard separation for all aircraft types). ATC then consults the grid and adjusts accordingly.

[2
117
post-202","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-blog","tag-nextgenairspace-redesignoptimal-flow-ratesads-btraffic-flowwake-turbllencewake-turbulence-categories-recatfaa-order-7110-659a
["GET
