The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) propose a $295,750 civil penalty against SkyWest Airlines. \u201cWhat for,\u201d you ask? SkyWest allegedly violated DOT drug and alcohol testing regulations.<\/p>\n<p>Chief Pilots, DOs, and human recourse personnel take notes: The FAA asserts SkyWest failed to include more than 150 safety-sensitive employees in its random drug testing pool. Furthermore, SkyWest allegedly failed to receive verified negative drug test results for two other employees before hiring one for, and transferring the other to, safety-sensitive positions.<\/p>\n<p>The FAA also contends SkyWest subjected three employees who were not in safety-sensitive positions to post-accident drug tests that are only applicable to safety-sensitive employees and improperly canceled a return-to-duty test because it was not directly observed.<br \/>Just because you are a small operator does not mean that the FAA does not take notice. In March 2014, Federal officials proposed a $55,000 fine against Whirlybird Helicopters, a Utah helicopter tour company, accused of violating drug and alcohol testing regulations.<\/p>\n<p>The FAA stated that the Ogden-based company failed to conduct pre-employment drug tests on eight employees who were hired to perform safety-sensitive operations on the helicopters. The agency also says three of the employees weren&#8217;t in Whirlybird&#8217;s random drug testing pool as required by the U.S. DOT.<\/p>\n<p>Are you seeing a basic theme here?
