Watch out for the meaning of ATC instructions outside of the US. They may not be the same.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">EuroControl recently issued a <a href=\"http:\/\/us1.campaign-archive1.com\/?u=0fa4593636877e9fd022bcdc1&amp;id=16953fee95&amp;e=1d69db0834\">safety briefing<\/a>\u00a0aimed at US pilots concerning the use of \u2018AT PILOTS DISCRETION\u2019 and \u2018WHEN READY\u2019 climb and descent clearances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">In many parts of the world, the phrases <b>\u201c<\/b>When Ready<b>\u201d<\/b> and <b>\u201c<\/b>At Pilot\u2019s Discretion<b>\u201d<\/b> are used interchangeably in both voice and data link communications, indicating the associated instruction\/clearance may be complied with or executed at any future time when the pilot is prepared to do so.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">In US airspace only, and in the context of a climb\/descend clearance, \u201cAt Pilot\u2019s Discretion\u201d also provides the flexibility for intermediate level offs after the climb or descent has been initiated by the pilot. However, a pilot may not return to any previously vacated levels. This option for an intermediate level off is <b>ONLY PERMITTED IN US AIRSPACE<\/b>. In all other airspace, the Pilot\u2019s Discretion climb or descent is continuous.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">EuroControl is reminding Aircraft operators that the option for an intermediate level off following an \u2018AT PILOTS DISCRETION\u2019 request to climb\/descend <b>applies only in US airspace<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Are you used to flying mostly within US airspace?
