That is a very wide range of performance, and probably, pilot capabilities. You will find this need to accommodate everything and everybody reflected in the new IPH as well. The Handbook has to serve the beginner as well as the grey hair/no hair members of the profession who have been doing it for a while.

You can locate the 2014 IPH by clicking this link.

Happy Referencing!

After seven years, our often overloaded and busy friends at the FAA have recently rolled out a major redo of the venerable Instrument Procedures Handbook (IPH). Although the IPH title remains the same, it has been issued under a new number. The new 2014 edition is now FAA-H-8083-16. This new edition is notable in the sense that seven years is a long time between revisions of any document in today’s world of rapid change, and the IPH has not appeared to be on a more standard type of revision cycle. In any event, the new model is most welcome.

I don’t have a sense that many line pilots are sleeping with a copy of the IPH under their pillow, but for us folks in the training business it, along with the AIM, is an excellent reference source and is occasionally cited in related training courses. I find that it is also useful as a place to get a head check on my recollections and understandings of matters that I have not looked into for a while; most recently, for example, the subject of Adequate Visual Reference during takeoff. The numerous graphics are a useful resource as well.

The new IPH is organized logically along the lines of a flight – Departures, En Route, Arrivals, and Approaches. This content, as you would expect, is now pretty much caught up with the latest on the subjects of the RNAV PBN world, with all of its numerous alphabet prodigy such as ADS, GLS, LPV, RNP, and so on. These chapters are followed by the less directly operational subjects, such as what’s ahead for us, as seen in Chapter 5, Improvement Plans. There is a good deal about NextGen in that chapter, which makes sense, since major NextGen elements are happening now. It also suggests that we may see more frequent updates of the IPH, as what are ‘plans’ today are rapidly becoming what ‘is’ tomorrow.

[2
120
post-208","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-blog","tag-faainstrument-procedures-handbookiphfaa-h-8083-16aimadequate-visual-reference
["GET
