Even though the aviation workforce has a very low positive drug and alcohol test rate compared to the total workforce in the United States, there must be no tolerance\u2014absolutely zero\u2014for alcohol and drug use in aviation. Testing does have a deterrent effect but alone will not solve this problem. Effective programs must also include strategies to identify and treat those who abuse drugs and alcohol.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 5px; float: right;\" alt=\"iStock 000003274349 Small\" src=\"images\/iStock_000003274349_Small.jpg\" height=\"373\" width=\"250\" \/>Good news! The FAA has determined that the minimum random drug and alcohol testing percentage rates for 2015 will remain at 25% of the safety-sensitive employees for random drug testing and 10% of safety-sensitive employees for random <a href=\"http:\/\/www.faa.gov\/about\/office_org\/headquarters_offices\/avs\/offices\/aam\/drug_alcohol\/testing\/media\/FederalRegisterNotice2015Rates.pdf\">alcohol testing<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Did you know the FAA Administrator&#8217;s decision on whether to change the minimum annual random drug testing rate is based on the reported random drug test positive rate for the entire aviation industry for the previous year? If the reported random drug test positive rate is less than 1.00%, the Administrator can maintain the current minimum random drug testing rate. In 2013, the random drug test positive rate was 0.485%. Consequently, the minimum random drug testing rate will remain at 25% for calendar year 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, 14 CFR 120.217(c) requires the decision on the minimum annual random alcohol testing rate to be based on the random alcohol test violation rate. If the violation rate remains less than 0.50%, the Administrator can maintain the current minimum random alcohol testing rate. In 2013, the random alcohol test violation rate was 0.091 %.
