What is the damage to your and your company\u2019s reputation when you go sliding off the end into the EMAS with the buckets fully deployed? When was the last time you heard about a plane on social media doing a go-around? When was the last time you had to text one of your friends and mention \u201cJoe Pilot had to do a go-around; where can we send flowers?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">For me, it\u2019s about $0.75 billion worth of liability if I hurt all of the those people because I let the economics of a go-around influence my decision. My company\u2019s safety culture drills go-arounds so strongly into us that they don\u2019t even want any paperwork if we go around. As silly as it may be, they know that pilots hate paperwork and don\u2019t want even that factoring into your decision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Does your company have a go-around policy? Have you reviewed it? Does the boss support it?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">Don\u2019t let the economics of a go-around affect your primary job\u2014the safe transport of your passengers or cargo.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">A few weeks ago, I was faced with one of those split-second decisions that we, as professional aviators, are paid to deal with\u2014the go-around. Sure, it\u2019s easy to say in ground school and among each other \u201cI\u2019ll always do the safe and smart thing and go around.\u201d But will you?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">I was faced with the expanding situation of a long duty day, minimal fuel reserves, rowdy passengers, a new co-pilot, and that ever-present gorilla in the room&#8230;the economics of a go-around. We like to make big noise that economics aren\u2019t a factor in our decision to go around, but you wouldn\u2019t be the Type A professional pilot that you are without thinking about dollars\/minute.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">In my situation, we were already late to our destination and the operation was waiting on our bird so another crew could take it on the next leg. So what does a go-around cost for us? Don&#8217;t even think about the fuel, but the operations folks tell me it costs between $1000 and $4000 for a go-around.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">What does it cost for your operation? Does the VIP in the back get upset because he\u2019s late for that meeting? Does it ruin your on-time performance that the company likes to use as advertising?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">It takes approximately 10-15 minutes, depending on the airport, to complete your cleanup, get back in sequence, reconfigure, and land.
