Cosmic Radiation

Cosmic Radiation

Aircraft crewmembers are more susceptible to radiation exposure when operating at high altitudes. Aircrew have the largest average annual effective dose of all U.S. radiation-exposed workers, although the increased risk of cancer from this cosmic radiation is less than 0.5%. The training includes flights that have higher exposure risks and ways to mitigate the risks.

The eLearning module was developed using several publications from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Office of Aerospace Medicine and the FAA has Advisory Circular (AC) 120-61B In-Flight Radiation Exposure.

There is no specific Part 135 requirement for training on Cosmic Radiation.
The module is not required by the International Standard for Business Aircraft Operations (IS-BAO) or Business Aviation Safety Consortium (BASC) standard.
