Runway Excursions

Runway Excursions

On average, there are two business aviation runway excursions per month in the United States, making it the most frequent business aviation incident. The Runway Excursion module includes the top 10 focus areas to prevent runway excursions in business aviation. Each focus area highlights recent business aviation runway excursions with lessons learned as a takeaway.

There is no specific Part 135 requirement for training on Runway Excursions. We typically include the module as part of the Emergency Situations module. A review of Safety Alert for Operators (SAFO) 06012, 11011, 14005, 15009, 16008, and 17009; InFO 15003; and Advisory Circular (AC) 91-79A Change 1 is included in the module.
International Standard for Business Aircraft Operations (IS-BAO) 6.21.1 recommends training on Runway Excursions. The module also complies with the IS-BAO training requirement for "additional training that is required to ensure a safe operation" defined in Chapter 8 of IS-BAO.
