Last Call Before Pushback

Did you hear about the FAA’s recent focus on cabin beverage service before pushback? On May 27, the FAA revised its interpretive guidance, and by September 1, enforcement of that tighter reading was in full effect for major airlines: every cup and glass the airline hands out must come back before the aircraft moves. A passenger’s coffee can stay in the cabin; anything the airline poured must go.

Believe it or not, 14 CFR 121.577, the rule now under tighter FAA enforcement, and 14 CFR 135.122, the rule that already governs Part 135 operators, came out of the same 1992 rulemaking. The text in both reads almost the same: no certificate holder-furnished food, beverage, or tableware may remain at a passenger seat before the aircraft moves on the surface, takes off, or lands. Trays, tray tables, and carts (if applicable) must be stowed, and passengers must comply with crew instructions accordingly.

For a Part 135 flight department, this is a good chance to confirm your training material cites 14 CFR 135.122 directly, alongside verbiage that has evolved in-house over the years. A rule unchanged since 1992 stays current when training keeps pointing back to the actual citation.
